In this new edition of Google I/O, just like last year, the updates have mainly focused on Gemini. However, there have also been updates for Android, Wear OS, and Android TV, among others. Let’s review the highlights.

IA

The main presentation on the first day focused on Google’s AI: Gemini. With it comes a new series of features, projects, and improvements to Google’s products.

Project Astra

A universal AI assistant capable of quickly responding to questions about what it sees through the camera. During the conference, an example was shown of how the AI was able to find objects on a table

Search Engine

In the search engine, you will be able to make searches using complex questions: that is, questions whose answers have several steps or sub-questions. This way, the search engine can help us plan entire days of a trip, for example.

Gemini Scam Call Alerts

A new feature where Gemini can alert the user that they are being scammed during a call.

VEO

A generator of HD videos at 1080p, over a minute long, from a prompt (similar to Sora) applying different visual and cinematic styles.

Ask Photos

Ask Photos is the new feature in Google Photos that incorporates Gemini in its search engine to find photos based on descriptions.

The Gemini family

These are the available Gemini models:

  • Flash, lightweight for quick responses.
  • Nano, for phones.
  • Pro, for general purposes on any device.
  • Ultra, the most powerful version.

Special mention for Gemma, a new free and open language model.

Android 15

The second beta of Android 15 has been released, and these are some of the new features announced:

Private Space

The second beta of Android 15 has been released, and these are some of the new features announced:

Google Play Live Threat Detection

The second beta of Android 15 has been released, and these are some of the new features announced:

Theft Detection Lock

Automatic device lock in case it detects it is being stolen. If the device is unlocked and detects a “jump” through accelerometers followed by a rapid change in location, the phone will lock again.

Proyecto Gameface

To use a mouse on the device without using hands, just with the face and facial expressions. This way, accessibility can be improved for many users.

News for Developers

Google Support for Kotlin Multiplatform

Google will officially support Kotlin Multiplatform, which means Jetpack libraries will work for KMP as well as support for JetBrains. This is a highly anticipated announcement in the KMP community and will give a significant boost to this technology.

Gemini in Android Studio

In addition to the chatbot that had already arrived in previous versions, Gemini lands in Android Studio as an assistant to suggest code, provide recommendations on crash reports, generate Composable code from an image, or a project starter template to use the Gemini API.

New Version of Jetpack Compose in June

In June, the new version of Jetpack Compose will arrive, including improvements in element transitions, animations in LazyList, HTML support in Text, and performance improvements among other new features.

Test captura oficial compose

A feature that existed before with Paparazzi but now has an official library. Experimentally, a new tool for screen tests using the preview of Composables.

Wear OS 5 Developer Preview

Developer preview version of Wear OS 5 that incorporates power optimization and compatibility with different screen sizes among other improvements.

Android TV y Google TV

Both Android TV and Google TV will be updated to Android version 14. And, of course, Gemini will be added to Google TV..
